Yesterday I purchased my first pair of TOMS Shoes. What attracted me to them was that they are cute, comfy, and light weight. I didn’t know the story behind them and when I read up about the company I was intrigued! Toms Shoes was founded in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie. The company designs and sells shoes based on the Argentine Alpargatas design as well as eyewear. When TOMS sells a pair of shoes a pair of shoes is given to an impoverished child, and when TOMS sells a pair of eye wear, part of the profit is used to save or restore the eyesight for people in developing countries. This is amazing and so heart warming to find a company that offers this. I am glad I purchased my first pair of TOMS shoes and I will continue to support their “one for one” movement. Toms’ business model has been referred to as the “one for one concept” business model, referring to the company’s promise to deliver a pair of free, new shoes to a child in need for every sale of their retail product. The countries to which the free products are sent have included Argentina, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Haiti, Rwanda, South Africa, and the United States.
History behind Toms Shoes
Blake Mycoskie first visited the country of Argentina while competing in the 2nd season 0f Amazing Race with his sister in 2002. He returned there on vacation in January 2006, where he noticed that the local polo players were wearing a form of shoes called Alpargatas; a simple canvas slip-on shoe that he himself began to wear. That’s where the inspiration for the classic style of TOMS shoes. The company name (TOMS) comes from the word “tomorrow, and evolved from the original concept, “Shoes for Tomorrow Project.”Classic Toms shoes are made from canvas or cotton fabric which I love especially for spring and summer. Later in the trip Mycoskie was doing some volunteer work in the outskirts of Buenos Aires when he noticed that many of the children were running through the streets barefooted. After discovering that a lack of shoes was a wider problem in Argentina and other developing countries, he decided that he wanted to develop a kind of alpargata for the North American market, with the promise that every pair sold he would provide a new pair of shoes free of charge to the shoeless youth of Argentina and other developing countries.
By 2012 over two million pairs of new shoes had been given to children in developing countries around the world. By 2011 over 500 retailers were carrying the brand globally. Purchase TOMS shoes at online at www.TOMS.com & amazon or your local shoe retailer. Shoes vary in price but I think they are very affordable. Did you know that many of our favorite celebs are wearing TOMS. Celebs seen wearing TOMS include but are not limited to Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Liv Tyler, Keira Knightly, Charlize Theron, and Scarlett Johanssen. Will you join the “One for One” movement?
